Sekere play

Sekere Play is a jubilant celebration of rhythm, identity, and cultural memory. With sweeping brushstrokes and a kaleidoscope of color, Said transforms the canvas into a living performance—where music is not just heard, but seen, felt, and embodied.

At the heart of the composition stands a stylized female figure, adorned with bold jewelry and a regal headpiece. Her pose—one arm bent, the other resting gently on her chest—suggests both grace and introspection. She is not merely playing the sekere; she is communing with it, channeling ancestral rhythms through her body.

The palette is electric: reds, oranges, blues, greens, and yellows swirl together in fluid harmony. These hues do more than decorate—they pulse with energy, echoing the vibrant sound of the sekere’s beads against its gourd. The background is alive with abstract floral motifs and swirling patterns, creating a sense of movement that mirrors the music’s cadence.

Said’s brushwork is expressive and layered, blending portraiture with abstraction. The figure seems to dissolve into the surrounding patterns, suggesting a unity between self and sound, performer and performance. The sekere, though not explicitly depicted, is evoked through gesture and rhythm—its presence felt in every curve and stroke.

Sekere Play is more than a visual tribute to a musical instrument—it’s a meditation on heritage, femininity, and the power of rhythm to connect past and present. Said invites us to witness not just a performance, but a ritual: a moment where sound becomes spirit, and art becomes memory.
